Trying to unravel your options to deal with your student loan debt?
You're not alone. There are over 43 million borrowers in the United States who owe nearly $1.4 trillion in student loan debt. In fact, today's average public university student graduates with more than a four-year degree; they also have more than $30,000 in debt.
The good news: there is a lot of completely free help online. Your loan servicer(s) and the U.S. Department of Education all have websites with a lot of information, as well as many tools and calculators. The Federal Student Aid website is a great place to start.
The bad news: not only is there a lot of information, but a lot of it isn't straightforward. Most of the tools that you will find focus on payments, not cancellation or forgiveness programs. Additionally, none of the tools are comprehensive. You just can't sort through hundreds of options in "five steps or less."
